How do I setup a secure web site using SSL?

Step One: Choose the IP address for the secure web site.

Each secure web site must have its own unique IP address. If your NetMAX already is hosting more than one web site, you will need to add an IP address to the appropriate network interface. Follow these steps to add an IP address to the appropriate network interface:

  1. In the NetMAX interface, select Home | Network | Interfaces.
  2. Click on the pencil' of the appropriate network interface.
  3. Scroll down to the 'IP Address' box and type in the IP address (NOTE: The IP address MUST be on the same network as the other IP address(es) assigned to the network interface; for example, if the NIC already has the ip address 10.1.1.1, you can add 10.1.1.12, 10.1.1.5, etc.)
  4. Click on the +' button to add the IP address to the IP address box.
  5. Store and commit this change.

Step Two: Set up the domain for the secure web site.

  1. In the NetMAX interface, select Home | Network | Domains.
  2. Click on the Create' button to create a domain.
  3. Type in the domain name (you must use a fully qualified domain name such as mydomain.net').
  4. If the NetMAX will be the primary name server for this domain, select the option Act as primary name server'.
  5. Scroll down to the Networks in this Domain' box. Under Primary IP Address', type in the new IP address. Select the appropriate netmask for the IP address. Then, click on the +' button to add the IP address to the box.
  6. If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is providing DNS services for this domain, leave the option Act as primary name server' blank. Then, scroll down to the Additional Name Server' box and type in the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers.
  7. Store and commit this change.

Step Three: Create the host name for this domain.

  1. In the NetMAX interface, select Home | Network | Naming.
  2. In the 'NetMAX Name Settings' box, type in an entry for the new domain. For example, under 'Host Name', type the host name for the secure web site (for example, use 'www'. Under 'Domain' select the new domain. Then, select the new IP address.
  3. Click on the +' button to add this entry to the 'NetMAX Name Settings' box.
  4. Store and commit these changes.

Step Four: Create and/or install a Digital Certificate (SSL).

  1. In the NetMAX interface, select Home | Services | Certificates.
  2. Type in the name for the certificate.
  3. Select the appropriate host name from the drop-down menu (you should select the host name you created in Home | Network | Naming in Step Three).
  4. Fill in the appropriate information (such as Organization, Division, City, State/Province, etc.).
  5. If you choose to self-sign the certificate, select the option 'Self-Sign' and click on the 'Install' button.
  6. If you have the certificate signed by a Certificate Authority (CA), select 'CA Sign'. For more information about using CA signed certificates, click on the '?' in the upper, right-hand corner and review these topics:

  7. Once you have finished setting up the Digital Certificate, click on the 'OK' button in the upper, right-hand corner.

Step Five: Configure the web site.

  1. In the NetMAX interface, select Home | Services | WWW.
  2. Click on the 'Web Sites' tab.
  3. Click on the 'Create' button.
  4. You will see three tabs the 'Aliases' tab, the 'Options' tab and the 'Front Page' tab.
  5. Click on the Aliases' tab.
  6. Select the option 'Enable web site.'
  7. Provide a description for the web site.
  8. For the 'Web Site Host Method', select Name.
  9. For the 'Protocol', select 'https'.
  10. For 'Host Name', select the host name for the web site (this is the host name for which you set up the Digital Certificate in Step Four above).
  11. Choose the appropriate Digital Certificate.
  12. For 'Web Site Type', choose 'Path' and then click on the 'Select' button. Click on the 'Web' folder. Then, select the 'external' folder.
  13. Click on the 'Select' button in the upper, right-hand corner.
  14. If you are re-directing the web site to another web site, click on the 'Redirect' option. Then, provide a valid web address.
  15. Click on the Options' tab.
  16. Select the appropriate settings in the 'Web Site Properties' box. Note that the default file listed must have the same spelling and use the same upper and lower case letters as the file located in the web directory (for example, if the default file is 'Index.htm', make sure that Index.htm is stored in the directory).
  17. In the 'Web Site Access' box, if you want the web site to be accessible by anyone (even users who do not have accounts on the NetMAX), leave the 'Authorized Access Group' box blank. If you want any domain or IP address to be able to access the web site, select the option 'Deny the following' and leave the 'Domain/IP Address' box blank.
  18. Click on the Return' button.
  19. Then, store and commit these changes.

You should be able to access the secure web site using this web address:

https://www.mywebsite.net

Where 'www.mywebsite.net' is the name of the web site.
